Hello Philip Lee:
I picked up Bittersweet in the hope of gaining more insight into marriage as an institution and as a day-to-day issue my wife and I deal with through our child-rearing years. I ended up having other worlds of writing opened to me (Jean Vanier, Dimock, Coontz, and Cheever) for which I’m highly grateful. But the real bonus was the insights into friendship as my dearest male friend and I have been having a tough time since his separation. You gave me compassionate insight into his mind and dark year and into our relationship.
I would also like to congratulate you on the lightly woven integration of classical learning. It came across as helpful, well thought out, and apt.
Finally, I came away thinking you’d be a great guy to have a beer with. I’ve said the same of Shakespeare so it puts you in damned fine company. Well done,
Dan C.
Hi Philip:
Hope you are well. I don’t know if you are familiar with Kirk Mastin but he has a very interesting take on the future of journalism. Might make for a great speaker, if you are ever in need of one.
